Potty training is a HUGE milestone to journey through and summertime is one of the BEST times to go through this process! During the cooler months there usually multiple busy schedules at play, tons of layers when it comes to clothing, and you are most likely trapped inside on those freezy, dreary days! Summer opens tons of new opportunities to begin potty training!

Throughout the summer families often travel more and spend more time away from work and daycare which often makes for the perfect potty training recipe! Routine, consistency, and patience are some of the most important ingredients to use when beginning this process with your child!

Reasons why summer is the best time to potty train:

  • Fewer clothes – Due to warm weather, kiddos wear less clothing which will make it easier to rip off whatever they are wearing when they are rushing to the potty in time to go!
  • Lightweight clothes – In the summertime children wear looser, more lightweight clothing which allows their bodies to have more awareness of their bodily cues for when they need to GO!
  • More time spent at home – With summer break, vacations, and more time spent together as a family, summer is a great season to tackle this milestone before school begins in the Fall!
  • More outdoor time – Due to beautiful weather and spending more time outdoors, you won’t have to clean up as many indoor potty accidents and messes because you’ll probably be spending lots of time in the SUN!

Potty training often lands around the same age that children are preparing for Kindergarten. Because of this, summertime is often not only the perfect time but a crucial time to successfully potty train your child! Most kindergartens require children to be successfully potty trained before beginning school.

Also…did you know, June is actually Potty Training month?! This is even more motivation to potty train and celebrate your successes together! I know I’ll be rooting for you and celebrating with you this summer!

Potty training often lands around the same age that children are preparing for preschool and/or Kindergarten. Because of this, summertime is often not only the perfect time but a crucial time to successfully potty train your child! Many schools require children to be successfully potty trained before starting.

Being prepared will help to set your child up for success! Be sure to mentally prepare yourself before you venture out of the house as you go through this potty training process. Set your expectations at a realistic level, and be prepared for anything and everything!

Here are several things to carry with you during the summertime, while you are potty training to make life easier:

  • Wet wipes (duh!)
  • Small plastic bags, diaper disposal bags, or wet bags to contain all the messy clothes, wipes and anything that gets dirty
  • Several extra changes of clothes
  • Absorbent cloths to wipe up messes
  • Sticky notes to cover sensors on automatic flushing toilets
  • Rewards!
  • Towels (To lay down on any areas of the car that may catch any of the pee/poop)
  • Hand sanitizer (If 2020 taught us anything, it’s SANITIZE)

Here are several things you can do to avoid accidents at all costs while on the go:

  • Plan ahead for many potty breaks along your travels! Prepare yourselves mentally for a longer journey than the GPS is calling for!
  • Whenever you arrive to a new location, point out and even tour all new bathrooms in the area
  • Bring rewards, and make the potty training experience as fun as can be!
  • Don’t forget to pack potty themed books to read on the road!

Remember to remain calm, cool, and collected, even if your child does have an accident! They will grow fewer and fewer and eventually you will have an accident-free, successfully potty trained kiddo!

Happy pottying training!
